Reiki: An Energy Healing Therapy

Six years ago when I first heard about Reiki, I had absolutely no clue what it was about. My friend, N who was then a newly minted yoga teacher, and who had also been attuned to Reiki asked if I was up for a Reiki treatment. Being the open-minded, up-for-anything person that I am, I immediately jumped at the opportunity. I went in with no expectations and came out of the 1 hour session feeling a wonderful lightness in my being, was deeply relaxed, and in a state of blissful calm. It felt as if I had experienced the most amazing Balinese massage, except that this feeling was internal. I felt wonderfully ‘massaged’ from the inside-out.

From that single experience, I never stopped thinking about it. There was a certain pull towards Reiki that I could not shake off, and it would be six years later (in June 2015) that I woke up one morning and decided I would learn it for myself. I have since been attuned and certified in Usui Reiki in the first, second and third degrees, and am now currently in-training to be a Reiki Master, meaning that I will be able to teach classes and give attunements (to initiate others to Reiki) once I have completed my training. Nothing makes me happier and more passionate than to be able to share this blessing with others.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an energy therapy that works with the body’s own remarkable healing capabilities. It helps to promote and accelerate the natural healing process and restore balance on all levels, physical, mental and emotional.

The word Reiki comes from a Japanese word meaning ‘Universal Life Force’ or ‘Universal Energy’; it flows naturally through everything and is the force, or energy, that holds our Universe together.  ‘Rei’ meaning universal life force, and ‘Ki’ referring to the same ‘Qi’ in Qi Gong (or Chi Kung) – physical energy field or vital energy.

This energy is referred to as ‘energy at its purest’ and does not require anything to be added or worked on (to this energy) for us to utilize it directly.  It is used by the cells in our body to do its repair, work, or facilitate growth.

Reiki is totally safe and complementary to any form of treatment, be it natural or conventional, and can often be used in circumstances where other therapies may be contraindicated.

Reiki can be used by anyone of any age or physical circumstance as the transmission of the Reiki energy is non-draining and not dependent on the health or the belief systems of the practitioner. Humans, animals and plants can all benefit from the use of Reiki.

Reiki is not a belief system. You do not need to believe Reiki works or have a certain faith. Reiki is energy, not religion.

How does Reiki work?

A Reiki treatment is done through the hands. Simply by placing the practioner’s hands on themselves or others, the practitioner activates the flow of energy with no movement or posture necessary.  The Reiki energy will be used by the body to help heal, rejuvenate and reinvigorate.  Any health or wellness issue you suffer from, including physical ailments, disease, stress or anxiety, and any emotional or trauma based issues can often be helped with Reiki in a very gentle and releasing way.

The Reiki energy flows through the practitioner’s hands as if by osmosis; no intention, thought or belief is required to activate the Reiki and no diagnosis or direction is required during the healing process. It is the body’s own remarkable innate healing wisdom that directs and uses the energy where it is needed – it flows where it is required and as a practitioner, we do not control or direct where the energy flows. A Reiki practitioner acts merely as a channel, or vessel, to funnel the energy into the body; our bodies are doing the natural healing work.

A Reiki healing session typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes, and it is interesting to know that Reiki does not need to be conducted physically face-to-face; it can also be done remotely over distance. We are all energy beings connected to each other, and part of the larger whole. Similar to the principle of the power of prayer, there are no barriers to sending Reiki energy across time and space – tapping into Universal Life Force Energy or ‘God Energy’ is boundless and infinite.

What can Reiki do for you?

  • Dramatically reduces stress and anxiety
  • Increases energy and vitality
  • Gives a sense of peace and calm
  • Effectively treats a wide range of ailments and disease
  • Helps to balance your chakras and clear energy blockages
  • Provides overall balance to your physical, mental, emotional and energetic well-being
  • Creates a shift and increases your awareness

Reiki is ultimately an experiential therapy and the best way to experience it is to try it for yourself. Feel free to approach me if you have any questions, I will be happy to guide you. If you are based in Singapore and would like to schedule a session, please reach me on the ‘contact me’ page. The energy exchange for a private one hour Reiki treatment in-person is $120.
